Oracle Database 10g RAC Basic Concepts & Architecture Seminar

Canberra - 7th November ($1,237.50 incls. GST)

2-Day Exclusive Seminar Oracle Index Internals with Richard Foote

Canberra - 23rd -24th February

Indexes are a crucial component in any Oracle database. This two-day seminar is a detailed study of how various index structures are implemented by Oracle, including B-Tree, Reverse Key, Function-Based, Bitmap, Bitmap Join, Partitioned, Linguistic and Index Organized Tables. It discusses index internals, how indexes should be maintained and importantly examines how the Cost Based Optimizer determines their use or otherwise.

The seminar also dispels many common myths and misconceptions associated with Oracle indexes by proving index behavior with clearly defined case studies and repeatable test examples. Featuring many useful tips and tricks and current 11g new features, attendees will gain a solid knowledge of the various Oracle index structures and a clear understanding of appropriate index maintenance and index usage strategies.

Objectives:

  • Provide a clear understanding of how Oracle implements its various index structures and options
  • How to ensure indexes are used and maintained appropriately in their database environments
  • Help to detect, resolve and prevent issues relating to indexes.
  • Cover and expose myths and misconceptions regarding Oracle indexes
  • Provide a host of repeatable test casestovalidate index behaviour and performance

Day 1:

  • Introduction: Overview of Index Structures and Options
  • Session One: Introduction To B-Tree Indexes
  • Session Two: Index Statistics
  • Session Three: Indexes and Constraints
  • Session Four: Rebuilding, Coalescing and Shrinking Indexes
  • Session Five: Indexes And The Cost Based Optimizer

Day 2

  • Session Six: Miscellaneous Index Tips, Tricks and Traps
  • Session Seven: Linguistic Indexes
  • Session Eight: Additional Indexing Options
  • Session Nine: Partitioned Indexes
  • Session Ten: Bitmap Indexes

Tom Kyte, Oracle Database Guru
Ask Tom Live Seminar
Dates to be advised

For the first time, Oracle University presents Tom Kyte in Australia.
Presented in the same fashion as he answers questions on the AskTom.oracle.com website, Tom Kyte will present 9 seminar topics relevant to DBAs and Developers alike. Every session is aimed at both audiences.

Agenda for 2 Day Training Session:

  • All about binding
We'll briefly overview why it is extremely important with regards to performance, scalability and even security but quickly move into topics such as: Do I always want to bind? What is bind variable peeking? Is it good or evil in disguise or a bit of both?
  • All about encryption
From the dbms_obfuscation_toolkit, to dbms_crypto to transparent data encryption at the column level to tablespace encrypt and data pump encryption, well cover them all.
  • Materialized Views, Caching
In this session well explore what a materialized view is, how they work, when we might use them, and various useful `techniques you need to know in order to make the most of them.
  • Effective Indexing
We all know that "indexes are good", but what kind of index is appropriate, and under what circumstances? How does the type of index affect us? What are the considerations you want to be thinking of when coming up with your indexing scheme.
  • Storage Techniques
This session will look at the physical structures available to us, discuss when to use each. Techniques such as clustering, index organized storage, partitioning and compression will be investigated.
  • Reorganizing objects - when and how
We will discuss the times when a reorganization or rebuild is relevant, how to measure what youve done (to verify that the work performed did something useful!), and the best techniques for performing a reorganization of data.

Advanced Oracle 10g Performance Analysis and Tuning with Kyle Hailey

Sydney

To Be Advised

Melbourne

To Be Advised

Do you know how to assess the performance of an Oracle database?

This seminar aims to explain how you can do this
using revolutionary techniques.

This two day Oracle 10g Performance Tuning seminar will teach attendees how to fully harness the powerful new performance tuning and diagnostic tools in Oracle 10g. Attendees will learn techniques in order to gain the necessary skills and knowledge to finally conquer their database woes, thus allowing more time and freedom for you.

Topic 1: OEM 10g Performance Tuning Methodology
As a principle designer for OEM 10g performance monitoring pages, Kyle will explain in depth how to powerfully navigate, read and understand the data and graphs in OEM 10g to quickly identify analyze and solve performance bottlenecks.

Topic 2: "average session load" (ASL)
Attendees will be taught how to find the values or calculate the value of ASL in
OEM 10g, AWR, ASH report, and statspack and how to use this value to analyze database performance health and isolate and identify the causes for a performance problem, including calculating the value from statspack data.

Topic 3: Active Session History (ASH)
Attendees will be taught how to analyze ASH data with OEM 10g, ASH report as well as custom SQL scripts to directly mine ASH data for custom analysis of system so that the attendees will come out of the seminar with a tool kit to analyze and harness ASH data. ASH is a dense multidimensional data source and having a tool kit to analyze this data is crucial to harnessing it's power.

Topic 4: Sampling
Attendees will learn about Oracle samples and how to sample performance data themselves. An example of sampling will help attendees to learn how to collect ASH on any version of an Oracle database.

Topic 5: Wait Events
In this session, we will discuss in detail the causes, explanation and solutions for all the major wait events including the internal structures responsible for the wait events.
